Delbra Jones, Class of 2010
I would tell them to keep doing what they are doing. Pray that He will continue to guide them and watch each other’s' back.

Derrick Jones.jpg

Derrick Jones, Class of 2010
I would tell them to stay humble. Sometimes when a team is on a hot streak, they become arrogant and think they can’t be beaten. But that’s not true. So, I would encourage the Braves to continue to practice hard and study their opponent so that they can continue to dominate.

Justus Reedi.jpg

Justus Reed, Class of 2010
I would encourage the Braves to keep going strong. I would also tell them to continue to take every opponent seriously, no matter what their record is.

Christopher Davis.jpg

Christopher M. Davis, Class of 2011
I would encourage each member of our Braves football team to continue to be leaders by displaying good sportsmanship before, during, and after each game. Preparation begins with your mindset. Keep the right mindset and you will always be winners!

Elena Kostyleva.jpg

Elena Kostyleva, Class of 2004
I think the best way to encourage our football team is to attend their games, both home and away, wear purple and gold and cheer for them! Also, don’t forget to encourage your fellow alumni to attend the games and invite your family and friends to come with you. Give generously to Alcorn Athletics and support student scholarships.

Where do you find inspiration?
Lamar.jpg

LaMar Brown, Class of 2004

I find inspiration in my faith, the Holy Bible, prayer and the people that my god has placed in my life.

Traci White.jpg

Tracie White, Class of 2004

I find inspiration in life. Every person has a story of overcoming difficulties in their lives. I once heard that obstacles don't have to stop you and that you either move them, climb over them, or go around them. After a life altering accident in 2007, my eyes were opened to some truly inspirational people living ordinary lives. They live each day to the best of their abilities and overcome the obstacles minute by minute.

Jizette Hunt 1.jpg

Jizette Hunt, Class of 2009

I try to be more like my god each day. He is the reason why I wake up every morning with good health, which allows me to be able to do work and everyday tasks. Praying relieves stress and inspires me.

Lorenzo Thomas, Class of 2009

When I look at the next generation of black males, it makes me want to be a positive role model for them. Many of them are idolizing the wrong things.

Kourtney B.jpg

Kourtney Brown-Wells, Class of 2010

I find inspiration in the infinite possibilities that lay before me. The opportunities for success are everywhere, you just have to look for the leads and follow them. I know it sounds cliché, but the possibilities are enough inspiration for me.

What has life taught you recently?
Marriel Hardy.jpg

Marriel Hardy, Class of 2010 and 2014

Life has taught me a multitude of things lately. I’ve learned that perception is everything. The difficult situations in life we often face can be changed or improved just by simply being positive and looking at the bigger picture. There’s an old saying, “I’m too blessed to be stressed”. That mantra is so true. Life is hard, but there is always hope, joy and peace when we change our perception. Perception is everything!

Edgar Lewis[1].jpg

Edgar Lewis, Class of 2010

I've had lessons of friendship, truth and honesty, money, church, and family, etc., revisit me lately and I've confirmed this very one thing — I'm still alive. With that, I've learned to keep learning and growing, to denounce self-pride and be affective positively.

Lee Johnson.jpg

Lee Johnson, Class of 2010

Life has recently taught me that everyone needs down time. No matter how busy you get with work or pursuing goals, make sure you go to the beach with friends or attend a family BBQ.

Christian Jones[1].jpg

Christian Jones, Class of 2011

Life has taught me that you can’t let what other people's current status is affect your life. I use to see how well off others were and would be upset that I was not in their shoes. I had to understand and accept that my life and circumstances are different from theirs.

Candace Morgan-Bolton.jpg

Candace Morgan-Bolton, Class of 2011

Life has taught me to keep the faith in anything that I do. He can and will make a way out of no way. I have also learned that you must work hard for the things you want in life. My parents taught me that nothing in this world is free!

Danielle Hall.jpg

Danielle Hall, Class of 2010

I always prefer to ask questions. In my opinion, being inquisitive should be a trait for everyone to have because how would we know anything if we don't ask questions. I have always valued the ability to ask questions and research things instead of settling for what I think I know or what I have heard from others.

Jo Clark.jpg

Johnlyn Clark, Class of 2010

I ask a vast amount of questions. I believe questions are the best way to gain deeper insights and develop more innovative solutions.

J. Lake.jpg

Jerrilyn Lake, Class of 2011

I always ask "too many" questions!! I'm a very inquisitive person and I'm always seeking the truth. If I don't know something, I ask enough questions to bring me enough understanding about whatever I'm unsure about.

NuNu Pickens.jpg

Ralencia Pickens, Class of 2011

I go off of what I know. If what I know is not good enough, I'm going to ask questions until it helps what I already know!

Seaun Bishop.jpg

Shaun Bishop, Class of 2011

I ask questions because I like to know as much as I can so I don't have to wonder later. If I don't know or if I'm unsure of something, I ask questions. Often times, that question leads to another question, but that's all a part of knowing.

It’s almost time for Braves football! What game(s) are you most looking forward to this season?
Keldrich Claiborne.jpg

Kedrich Claiborne, Class of 2000

I am excited about all the games. I believe Alcorn will win each competition this season, but I am looking forward to the games against the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and Jackson State University. USM is going to be exciting because 91°µÍø is considered the underdog, but USM is rebuilding its program after a couple seasons of decline. Jackson State, the 2013 SWAC East "Best", is going to be a battle due to the 91°µÍø shattering their 2013 dreams of having a perfect SWAC season. The ASU vs. JSU game is always an anticipated game; I have not missed this game for the past 20 years. If Alcorn does not beat any other school during the season, I have the feeling of Alcorn winning the SWAC Championship when they beat JSU.

Beverly Adams.jpg

Beverly Adams, Class of 2005

I am looking forward to the Braves game with Southern. I became a Southernite first, and years later became an Alcornite. Now, 91°µÍø is where my “bread and butter” is, and Southern is where I obtained my first degree and had lots of youthful activities! My family is split when it comes to that game; therefore, it is always family fun and friendly rivalry going on!

Shalonda Williams.jpg

Shalonda Williams, Class of 2009

I always look forward to the Alcorn and Jackson State game because the game is traditional and I think everyone look forward to it. Every school wants to beat their rival.

Tanesha Hinton.jpg

Tanisha Hinton, Class of 2010, 2013

I’m definitely looking forward to the games against Jackson State and Alabama A & M so that I can see my family and close friends. It will give me a chance to come back to my alma mater.

Sharonda Wilson.jpg

Sheronda Wilson, Class of 2011

The only game I’m ready for is Homecoming. I live far away from Alcorn and that’s the day my sorors (Delta) and I always plan together.

If I could go back in time, I would get a graduate degree in Sports Medicine or Sports Administration. Sports are one of my loves.

Charlie McCullum, class of 2008
If I could go back in time I would have been more active in ensuring that every student is treated equally.

Nicole Bell, class of 2000 and 2010
If I could go back in time, I would have returned to the time when I was in college working on my bachelor’s degree. I changed my major so many times back then from math to nursing to physical therapy to accounting. Now I think that I should have stuck to one major – math.

Ekaterina Neveykina, class of 2010, 2012
If I had the chance to go back in time I would be more proactive in making every decision and less stressed out about life’s situations. I would not make any dramatic changes in my present life because I love it, especially my family. I would not try to change anything other than my perception of events.

Titus Sombour, class of 2013
I was a good student all through primary, middle and high school, but I think I could have done a better job in college working on my bachelors’. My grades were good, but they could have been excellent. So, if I had a chance, I would have gone back to college and studied a lot harder and used every opportunity that college offers.

Erica S. Johnson, Class of 1993

I would be 22, a recent graduate of Alcorn with the world at my feet. I would reinvent myself, take more chances and never open a credit card account.

Hong Loan Nguyen.jpg

Hong Loan Nguyen, Class of 2009

This is a very interesting question because to me, age is only a relative measure of time. How do we define time or rather how do we define time in one’s life? Is there a fixed universal standard that determines at what age one would finish growing up, building families or start planning for one’s retirement? Therefore, my age would not be an accurate predictor of my life events and vice versa. However, in an attempt to answer this question, I do hope that I would be old enough to appreciate the value of hard work, to recognize my life goals and to have the courage to embark on the journey of sweat and tears that will take me there. Yet on the other hand, I would still be young enough to dream about all that I could become and all that I could do for my fellows and for the world. I think it is appropriate to leave readers the following quote by Douglas MacArthur, "You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair."

Justus Reedi.jpg

Justus Reed, Class of 2010

If I didn’t know how old I was and had to choose my age, I would choose my current age of 27 because I am at a great place in my life. I feel that this is the beginning of my prime years. I’m smarter, wiser, working in a field that I love, involved with the right people and healthier than I have ever been. Life is great!

Jarrod Anderson.jpg

Jarrod Anderson, Class of 2010

I would be 30 because I think at that age you realize what's most important in life and focus on becoming a positive role model for those who are looking up to you.

James Pittman Jr.jpg

James Pittman Jr, Class of 2011

If I could pick an age and didn't know how old I was, I would be 21 again. Not too old and not too young. Not too much responsibility either. I would be old enough to be treated as an adult and able to enjoy the things that you can only enjoy when 21+. And who wouldn't want to be an age where you could relive those college days that so swiftly passed by.

Andriae Payton Holt, class of 1989

If I could try out any job for a day it would be in the field of philanthropy. I would love to manage an organization that has the resources to donate large sums of money to support the end of hunger and disparities in healthcare and education in the United States. I believe if these basic needs are met it would level the playing field for many Americans. The idea of having one day to determine who the resources would benefit and allocating those resources to help in these areas of need would be so fulfilling.

Jennifer Wallace.jpg

Jennifer Young Wallace, Class of 1991

I would want to be a congresswoman because it would allow me an opportunity to be a voice for all of the people in Mississippi. I would network to bring jobs to the Delta that will allow my fellow citizens an opportunity to live a life that meets their daily needs. I would support a movement to educate people and change their minds from a mind of poverty to a mind of financial discipline, education and commitment to their community.

Gregory Jackson Jr, Class of 2003

I would try working as a plant (nuclear/manufacturing) designer. I'm a graduate of the Department of Advanced Technologies and in my freshman year I had taken the industrial plant design class. It truly peak my interest and I loved every minute of that class. The instructor was great and effective.

If I had the opportunity to try any job for one day, I would be an electronic dance music (EDM)/deep house music producer. Music has the power to unleash so many varying emotions from sadness to joy, etc. Having the opportunity to evoke these deep emotions in listeners is truly marvelous. If I were able to simply make someone's day better through music, I think that all the hard work to create my masterpiece would be worth it.

Latrice Garner.jpg

It's almost time to kick off a new academic semester, what advice would you give incoming freshmen to make certain that they stay focus and graduate in four years?

five alumni kawanda bell.jpg

Kawanda Bell, Class of 2002, 2005

The advice that I would give to incoming freshmen is make sure that whatever you are majoring in is something that you can see yourself doing in the near future. Also, make sure that this is something that sparks your interest! It's okay to have fun; however, too much of it may throw you off track. Set your goals, work hard to achieve them and remain focused!

five alumni srdjan.jpg

Srdjan Gojkovic, Class of 2006

My advice to the students is this: do not think of your class curriculum as just a grueling task that needs to be done in order to simply pass a course. Think of it as an opportunity to learn something new that will enrich your personality. Even if you think today that a particular class will be irrelevant to your future career, you would be surprised how much more respect and opportunities are given to well-rounded graduates as opposed to those that are only proficient in technical skills.

five alumni andrew nicholas.jpg

Andrew Nicholas Jr., Class of 2009

One piece of advice I would have to give an incoming freshman is to stay consistent and persistent. In four years, your goal is to be the professional that you aspire to be. If you stay consistent with your studies and stay persistent in your pursuit for what you aspire to be, nothing or no one can stop you. Aim high and settle for greatness.

five alumni ryan martin.jpg

Ryan Martin, Class of 2010

I would tell the incoming freshman class that in order to graduate on time, you should have constant communication with your department chair and advisor and find an on campus mentor you can speak to for encouragement.

five alumni jason palmer.jpg

Jason Palmer, Class of 2010

I would tell incoming freshman to manage their time wisely. College is fun and there will be many opportunities for them to engage in all that college has to offer. However, the main purpose of college is to get an education. Those who manage their studies early in college have more fun in their junior and senior years because they aren't digging themselves out of holes created in their freshman and sophomore years.

Imogene Stubbs, Class of 1974

Our neighbor died and when my husband James and I stopped by to express our condolences, we noticed that the air conditioning was not working. We immediately called our technician to come out and repair it and send us the bill. She and her family were so appreciative.

Snezhana Polyakova.jpg

Snezhana Polyakova, Class of 2002

A few years back, I found myself sitting in a café, crying… I hit a rough patch and tears were pouring down my face uncontrollably. A young girl was finishing her lunch at the table next to mine. As she paid her bill and was headed out the door, she dropped a hand-written note on my table and kept moving. I looked at the note and smiled… things didn’t seem to be so bad anymore. Till this very day, I keep that note pinned to my refrigerator as a gentle reminder that everything always gets better in the end. And here is what the note said: “You are BEAUTIFUL. I promise, it will get better. ‘Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.’

Gloria Porter.jpg

Gloria Washington-Porter, Class of 2005

I often do random acts of kindness because it is a blessing to be the lender. The word teaches us that we are blessed to bless others. I am a 7th grade ELA teacher in Tensas, one of my students scored “mastery” on his state test. I rewarded him with a tablet and all of the other students received gift cards or uniforms to begin the next school year!

Derrick Jones.jpg

Derrick Jones, Class of 2010

I have both experienced and performed an act of kindness.

I was driving home one night and I saw a car with its emergency lights on. This young lady was out of gas. Fortunately, I had a gas container in my trunk and I drove her to and from the nearest gas station.

I have also received an act of kindness during an internship with Alcorn at the Natchez Farmers Market. A tourist from Belgium gave me a $50 tip for helping her carry her groceries.

“Do right and right will follow you” is a quote I learned from my father and I abide by it daily.

Nakita Frye.jpg

Nakita Frye, Class of 2010

Whenever I can help someone I will whether it’s sharing food or assisting with a homework assignment.

It brightens up my day to be there for someone in need because you never know when the day will come that you need a “random act of kindness” bestowed upon you.
